ASME standards – a global benchmark for quality

Today, ASME requirements are more than just an industry standard. They represent a clear indication that equipment meets international expectations for safety, reliability, and quality. Behind this lies not a formal set of rules, but over a century of engineering evolution.

At the end of the 19th century, industry was rapidly expanding. Production scaled up, demand increased, and companies began manufacturing serial products — from mechanical devices to complex power systems. At that point, it became clear: without unified rules, neither safety nor quality could be guaranteed.

In 1880, a group of engineers in New York founded ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) as a platform for knowledge exchange and the development of common engineering approaches. Within just a few years, practical standards emerged — from boiler testing procedures to the standardization of pipe dimensions. This laid the foundation for what we now call industrial standardization.

When standards became critical

In the early 20th century, boiler explosions became a serious issue. The most notable incidents occurred at factories in Massachusetts. After these events, authorities could no longer ignore the problem, and the first regulations for pressure equipment were introduced. However, local requirements were not enough. The industry needed a unified set of rules applicable everywhere.

This led to the creation of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). Its first edition was released in 1915, marking the point when standardization became systematic and industry-wide.

Standards beyond manufacturing

As technology advanced, the scope of standards expanded. A clear example is elevators. As buildings grew taller, elevators became an essential part of everyday infrastructure, increasing the demand for safety.

In 1921, ASME introduced the A17 standard, defining requirements for elevator design and operation. Later, inspection guidelines were added. This marked a new level of standardization — covering not only manufacturing but also equipment operation.

The era of nuclear energy

The mid-20th century introduced fundamentally new challenges. The development of nuclear energy required the highest level of reliability across all systems. Engineers working on the first reactors relied on existing ASME standards for pressure vessels, as the underlying physical principles were similar. However, this was not sufficient.

In 1963, a dedicated section of the BPVC was introduced specifically for the nuclear industry. It covers the design, manufacturing, and inspection of components operating under the highest safety requirements. Since then, this section has continuously expanded and today applies to all critical systems of nuclear facilities.
