Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steels are specified where conventional stainless steel cannot provide the required combination of high-pressure strength, resistance to aggressive chemicals and protection against localised corrosion.
In piping systems, these materials are used for flanges, fittings, valves, forgings and other components operating in demanding oil and gas, offshore and chemical environments.
SalesSolution is a Russia-based Engineering & Supply Company supplying equipment and pipeline components in Duplex, Super Duplex, and nickel alloys for oil & gas and chemical projects where resistance to chlorides, hydrogen sulphide, seawater, and aggressive media is required.
The most widely used grades covered by ASTM A182 include:
• F51: Duplex S31803 / S32205, commonly known as 2205
• F53: Super Duplex S32750, commonly known as 2507
• F55: Super Duplex S32760

What are Duplex and Super Duplex Steels?
Duplex stainless steels have a two-phase microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite. The structure is normally controlled close to a 50/50 balance, although the actual phase ratio depends on the grade, heat treatment and welding procedure.
The ferritic phase increases strength and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The austenitic phase supports ductility and general corrosion resistance.
As a result, Duplex grades have higher strength than conventional 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steels, perform better in chloride service and can permit a lower wall thickness for the same design load.
Super Duplex contains higher levels of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen. This composition provides greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in seawater and high-chloride environments.
Main advantages of Duplex Steels
Duplex and Super Duplex are used in high-pressure piping because they combine:
• high mechanical strength
• resistance to pitting corrosion
• resistance to crevice corrosion
• resistance to stress-corrosion cracking
• potential reduction in wall thickness for the same design load
• long service life in chloride and marine environments
ASTM A182 F51 (Duplex 2205)
ASTM A182 F51 is the most widely specified Duplex grade for Flanges, Forgings and valve components. In common project practice, F51 is associated with Duplex S31803 or S32205, also known as 2205.
Applications
ASTM A182 F51 is used in:
• oil and gas piping
• offshore platforms
• chemical processing
• desalination plants
• piping with moderate chloride concentrations
• process lines with elevated strength requirements
F51 Properties
• yield strength approximately twice that of 316L
• higher chloride resistance than conventional austenitic stainless steels
• good weldability when qualified heat-input limits are followed
• resistance to stress-corrosion cracking
• lower component mass through reduced wall thickness
F51 is sensitive to excessive heat input during welding and is subject to maximum service-temperature limitations. For many Duplex grades, the upper continuous-service limit is around 300 °C, although the final value must be established from the applicable standard, fluid service and project specification.
ASTM A182 F53 (Super Duplex 2507)
ASTM A182 F53 corresponds to Super Duplex S32750, commonly known as 2507. It provides higher strength and corrosion resistance than standard Duplex for more demanding service.
Where it is used
ASTM A182 F53 is used in:
• offshore platforms
• subsea and deepwater oil and gas systems
• chemical reactors
• high-chloride process lines
• seawater service
• piping with a high risk of pitting corrosion
Advantages of F53
• very high strength
• high resistance to pitting corrosion
• resistance to aggressive seawater
• high fatigue strength
• resistance to crevice corrosion
• suitability for critical offshore areas
F53 requires strict control of heat treatment, welding and final examination. It is more demanding to manufacture and install than F51 and costs more than conventional stainless steel.
ASTM A182 F55 (Higher-Alloyed Super Duplex)
ASTM A182 F55 corresponds to Super Duplex S32760. This grade provides enhanced corrosion resistance for some of the most demanding marine and oil and gas environments.
Applications
ASTM A182 F55 is used for:
• highly aggressive marine environments
• oil production containing high levels of H₂S and CO₂
• systems with extreme salinity
• critical offshore infrastructure
• process lines with combined high corrosion and mechanical loading
F55 Characteristics
• the highest corrosion resistance among widely used Duplex solutions
• high mechanical strength
• high resistance to chlorides
• more limited market availability
• stringent welding and quality-control requirements
SalesSolution manufactures and supplies pipeline components and equipment in Duplex S31803, Super Duplex S32750 and S32760, as well as nickel alloys including Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625 and Incoloy 825. This material range supports selection for the actual fluid service instead of substituting one grade for another without an engineering basis.

Why Duplex Steels matter in high-pressure piping
High-pressure systems are vulnerable to stress-corrosion cracking, pitting, flow-assisted erosion and fatigue loading.
Duplex steels address several requirements at the same time:
• lower wall thickness may be possible
• design strength margin is increased
• service life can be extended
• the risk of localised corrosion is reduced
• piping assemblies can be lighter
These benefits are particularly relevant to offshore assets, seawater systems and oil and gas service. Conventional stainless steel may provide acceptable general corrosion resistance while offering less protection against pitting and stress-corrosion cracking.
Applications in piping systems
Duplex and Super Duplex are used in:
• marine and offshore systems, including subsea piping, risers and platform pipework
• oil and gas facilities, including well flowlines, high-pressure systems and gas-condensate plants
• chemical facilities handling aggressive reagents, acids, salts and reactor service
Limitations of Duplex Steels
Despite their technical advantages, Duplex and Super Duplex grades have important limitations:
• sensitivity to incorrect heat treatment
• risk of losing the required phase balance
• service-temperature restrictions
• more demanding welding procedures
• stricter quality-control requirements
• risk of detrimental phase formation during incorrect heating
Process errors can reduce corrosion resistance and cause embrittlement or intergranular damage. The material package must therefore include correct documentation, chemical-composition control and verification of the welding procedure.
Common errors when applying Duplex and Super Duplex
Mistake 1: replacing 316L with Duplex without a design assessment. The result may be unnecessary cost or an unsuitable system design.
Mistake 2: using an incorrect welding procedure. Excessive or insufficient heat input can change the phase balance and reduce corrosion resistance.
Mistake 3: specifying Duplex for high-temperature service without checking the limits. Prolonged exposure above the permitted range can degrade the material.
Mistake 4: mixing metals without evaluating galvanic effects. An unsuitable material combination can accelerate local corrosion.
Mistake 5: selecting Super Duplex only for strength without analysing the fluid. F53 and F55 are justified where the corrosion conditions genuinely require them.
Practical selection logic
A practical engineering sequence is:
• conventional service: 316L
• moderately aggressive and chloride-containing service: F51 / Duplex S31803
• seawater and offshore service: F53 / Super Duplex S32750
• extreme service: F55 / Super Duplex S32760
• acids and exceptionally aggressive chemicals: Hastelloy C-276 or another suitable nickel alloy
ASTM A182 F51, F53 and F55 are used in piping systems exposed to corrosive media and high pressure. Their key advantage is the combination of strength and corrosion resistance, which can reduce component mass and extend piping life.
The selected Duplex grade affects service life, operating safety, tolerance of upset conditions and total life-cycle cost.
Project references include Amur GCC (SIBUR and Sinopec) and NIPIGAS. Prior to 2022, SalesSolution worked with EPC contractors including Saipem, Toyo Engineering, Maire Tecnimont and The Linde Group. In these project environments, Duplex and Super Duplex grades are supported by calculations, material certificates and traceability requirements.
For oil and gas and offshore infrastructure, Duplex is not a universal replacement for stainless steel. It is an engineered material for critical piping locations where the operating environment justifies its use.
